About Paddington

Situated in the heart of London, Paddington is in the City of Westminster and its most prominent feature is the railway station that was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and opened in 1847. It also houses St Mary’s Hospital and incorporates Maida Vale, Bayswater, Lancaster Gate and Westbourne.

It used to be a place synonymous with poverty until a huge rebuilding project revitalised the area in the 1930s with further redevelopments taking place between the 1960s and 1980s.

The Paddington section of the Grand Union Canal opened in 1801 and was an important trade route. It joined Regent’s Canal in 1820. In recent years, the disused waterways have been transformed with regeneration.

The Social Side of Paddington

Thanks to extensive regeneration, Paddington has become one of London’s most popular districts to work, live and socialise in. The station has undergone a huge facelift since 2009 and it’s now one of the UK’s busiest stations. The area has also benefitted from Crossrail with 24 trains stopping at Paddington every hour.

More than 2,000 new homes have been built in the area since 2,000 and with them, community spaces can be found at every turn. There are countless pockets of greenery, fountains and shady spots in which to sit and wile away a lunch hour. Hyde Park and Oxford Street are within walking distance as is the unique and tranquil Little Venice area.

The canal means there is an abundance of wildlife in the area that co-exists alongside a bustling population enjoying the countless restaurants, bars, galleries and thriving public areas.

It’s a modern district which embraces its history. Hetherwick’s Rolling Bridge can be seen unfurling over Paddington Basin while Knight Architects Fan Bridge allows boats to pass from the Basin to the Grand Union Canal.

The transformations continue with the former sorting office set to house new retail and hospitality venues and form a piazza at the entrance to Paddington Station.
