About Edgware Road
Once part of a Roman Road, Edgware Road runs for 10 miles in an unusually straight line for the capital. It constitutes part of the A5 and runs from Marble Arch in the centre of town, to Edgware in the North. It also forms the boundary for four London boroughs, namely Harrow, Brent, Barnet and Camden.
In the 18th century, it was a popular spot for Huguenot migrants and then, in the 19th century, thanks to increasing trade with the Middle-East, it became popular with Arabs, which is still apparent in the mix of shops, restaurants, bars and shisha cafes that are characteristic of the area.
The Social Side of Edgware Road
Sometimes called ‘Little Beirut’, Edgware Road is a colourful and characterful area of London that has been transformed by Arab immigrants. If you’re looking for the best Lebanese food in town or a popular shisha cafe, then this is the place to be. From ice-cream, through to dates, trinkets or clothing, it’s the neighbourhood to visit if you’re looking for genuine Middle Eastern goods.
It’s also a fantastic place for independent cafes that sit alongside the chains such as Costa and Caffe Nero. There’s a slower pace of life here and it’s customary to sit and wile away some time over your coffee, mint tea, etc.
Thanks to excellent transport links, there are numerous well-known hotels scattered up and down Edgware Road, including the Hilton London Metropole with its indoor pool and spa. A short hop from Edgware Road, you’ll also find the Spa at The Landmark London, the Henonic S Spa and the Crystal Palace Spa in Crawford Street.
For art lovers, Frameless, a permanent gallery dedicated to immersive art, is worth a visit in the Old Odeon building at Marble Arch.
For green space, Hyde Park marks the beginnings of Edgware Road while there are smaller public gardens to be enjoyed along the length of it, including Norfolk Crescent and nearby Broadley Street Gardens and St Mary’s Churchyard, Paddington.
