About Chancery Lane
Connecting High Holborn and Fleet Street, Chancery Lane is a one-way street situated in the Farringdon district. Traditionally, it was a place where the legal profession gravitated and nowadays, they work alongside a range of other businesses. It’s also home to the Maughan Library, the main research library for King’s College and the main Law Society building.
Chancery Lane gets its name from the High Court of Chancery, a court specialising in equity law (i.e cases where common law couldn’t wasn’t flexible enough or able to provide a solution).
The oldest tailors in London, Ede and Ravenscroft, are situated at No.93 and The Silver Vaults are also located there.
The Social Side of Chancery Lane
Chancery Lane is located in a busy district, close to Holborn, Strand and Fleet Street and served by Chancery Lane, Holborn and Blackfriars tube stations, with City Thameslink nearby.
Traditionally a place that was inhabited by the legal profession, it’s close to the Royal Courts of Justice and Lincoln’s Inn Fields, which offers green space plus tennis and netball courts.
It runs off Fleet Street, once home to the UK newspaper industry with many of the pubs once frequented by journalists, still in operation today. The Cheshire Cheese is one of the most historic and is one of the capital’s few remaining chop houses. It still has a sawdust floor which is refreshed twice a day. The pub was rebuilt in 1667 after being destroyed by the Great Fire of London. It was a favourite haunt of Charles Dickens, Dr. Samuel Johnson and Oliver Goldsmith among others.
Chancery Lane itself, is populated by a number of great pubs, restaurants and cafes, including the Six Clerks Bar, Brasserie Blanc, and Gaucho Chancery Lane.
It’s also a short walk from Dr. Johnson’s House in nearby Gough Square. Open to the public, this 300-year-old Grade 1 listed town house, was the home of Samuel Johnson and houses a research library and boasts impressively restored interiors and original features.
