About Cannon Street

Cannon Street lies in the heart of London’s financial district and was once a place where candle-makers resided. It was originally called Candlewright Street and is at the historic heart of London with a mix of old buildings, great restaurants and riverside bars. Cannon Street begins at St Paul’s in the east and runs along to Queen Victoria Street near Mansion House tube station. It meets Gracechurch Street that lies a stone’s throw from Mansion tube station. In addition to the District, Circle, Central, Northern and Waterloo & City lines, it is served by mainline rail and the Docklands Light Railway.

The Social Side of Cannon Street

Cannon Street has more pubs in a small area than any other part of London, many of them are traditional and also offer reasonably priced pub grub.

Along the river, there are plenty more bars with fantastic views of the Shard and London Bridge. It’s hard to get a seat here after 4pm during the summer months.

If it’s views you’re after, then the Sky Garden at Sky Garden Walk is a must visit, offering a panoramic vantage point for free.

Cannon Street contains one of the most famous ancient relics in the capital, the London stone, which is now housed in the southern wall of the Church of St Swithin. It was once a Roman milestone.

Nearby Leadenhall Market with its ornate painted ceiling, has featured in several Hollywood movies and is populated by some charming independent shops.

History buffs can visit St Paul’s cathedral or marvel at the Monument to the Great Fire of London that was completed in 1677 to mark the rebuilding of the capital after the famous blaze that started in Pudding Lane.

For those seeking solitude at lunchtime, or after work, St. Dunstan’s in the East Church, which is a stone’s throw from Cannon Street station, is a picturesque ruin with beautiful gardens that give the place a magical feel.
