About Barbican
Situated in the City, The Barbican estate began life in 1965 and achieved grade II listing in September 2009. It’s home to more than 4,000 residents and contains the biggest performing arts venue in Europe.
The area was badly bombed during the Second World War and it took many years to develop the Barbican Estate which was once voted London’s ugliest building while being feted by many for its brutalist architecture. It has been used as a location by several TV shows and films and transport links are excellent with Barbican, Farringdon, Moorgate and St. Paul’s tube stations nearby. Liverpool Street Railway Station is also a short distance.
The Social Side of Barbican
The area is home to The Barbican, a renowned arts, educational and conference centre that opened in 1982 and is home to the London Symphony Orchestra, The Royal Shakespeare and the BBC Symphony Orchestra among others.
The vast concrete structure which was built to change the way we experience the urban landscape, The Barbican houses theatres, galleries, concert halls, cinemas along with numerous bars, cafes and restaurants. It also houses a vast conservatory containing more than 1500 species of plants and trees, a library plus community and public spaces.
The focal point of the centre is a lake and for those seeking green space at lunchtime and after work, The Thomas More Gardens are a relaxing haven as are The Barbers’ Physic Garden which incorporates part of the ancient Roman walls that formed a barrier around London. It blooms on what was once a derelict bomb site. Postman’s Park, which features a memorial to those who have committed heroic deeds, is also a stone’s throw away.
The area is served by a good selection of restaurants and bars and the nearby streets surrounding The Barbican Estate are characterful and well worth exploring on foot.
