About Blackfriars
Located in Central London, Blackfriars has a mainline railway station that provides Thameslink and regional services to Bedford, Cambridge and Brighton and is the only station in the capital that spans the River Thames. It is partly in the borough of Southwark and partly in the City. That station was renovated in 2009 and 2012 with a new entrance being built on Bankside. The area gets its name from Blackfriars Priory which first appeared in records in 1317.
The area includes Bankside and Southwark while The Victoria Embankment is situated on the north bank of the Thames west from Blackfriars and stretches to Westminster Bridge.
The Social Side of Blackfriars
The Blackfriars area is a hot spot for al fresco eating and drinking, especially in the summer months when the endless riverside restaurants and bars attract the after work crowd and tourists alike. There are some notable eateries in the vicinity, including the Oxo Tower and the Sea Containers London Hotel.
The area offers a mix of some of London’s finest architecture such as St.Paul’s Cathedral, the neoclassical Unilever House on the Victoria Embankment and the Gherkin, amidst Roman ruins and Grade II listed buildings like the Black Friar pub.
Shakespeare’s Globe theatre is located near Blackfriars station on the South Bank side of the River while the Bridewell Theatre is a three minute walk away.
There are plenty of spots to sit and reflect along the river and for those who want a burst of greenery, the Victoria Embankment Gardens never disappoint.
The 2000 year old St.Bride’s Church, one of Christopher Wren’s masterpieces, is situated in nearby Fleet Street, once the home of the nation’s press. The church’s links to the printed press continue to this day and it commemorates journalists with an annual service.
The Tate Modern is also a short walk from Blackfriars Station featuring regular exhibitions and events, many of them free.
